What is it like to live in Lisbon Portugal?

The experience of living in Lisbon is wonderful! Here are some things that I enjoy while living in Lisbon:


The Weather!

Lisbon has a Mediterranean climate, which means you can enjoy mild winters and warm summers! The city also gets plenty of sunshine throughout the year. In the summer months, you can expect temperatures to range from around 20 to 30 degrees Celsius (68 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit), with plenty of sunny days and occasional ocean breezes to keep things comfortable. During the winter months, which run from December to February, temperatures are cooler, but still quite mild compared to many other European cities. You can expect daytime temperatures to range from around 10 to 15 degrees Celsius (50 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit), with occasional rain showers.


The mild temperatures and beautiful views of the city and the Atlantic Ocean make it a great place to be!


The Culture!

Lisbon is a city with a rich history and culture, with many museums, art galleries, and

historical landmarks to explore. You can also enjoy various cultural events and festivals throughout the year. The culture in Lisbon, Portugal is a rich and diverse mix of traditional and modern influences. Portuguese culture is known for its warmth, hospitality, and love of good food, wine, and music.

For example; Fado is a traditional Portuguese style of music that is often performed in small bars and restaurants around Lisbon. It's characterized by its mournful, soulful sound and often features songs about love, loss, and heartbreak.

Festivals! Lisbon loves to celebrate, and there are many festivals and events throughout the year, from the Carnival in February to the Feast of St. Anthony in June, where the streets come alive with music, dancing, and colorful decorations. Sports! Football (soccer) is a huge part of the culture in Lisbon, with several local teams and a passionate fan base. Other popular sports in the city include futsal (indoor football), basketball, and surfing.


The Food!

Lisbon is a food lover's paradise, with plenty of local dishes to try, including fresh seafood, grilled meats, and traditional sweets! Lisbon is known for its delicious seafood, especially fresh sardines grilled on outdoor charcoal grills. Wine is also a big part of the culture, with many excellent local vineyards producing high-quality wines.

Here are a few dishes you might want to try: Grilled sardines! This is one of the most iconic dishes in Lisbon, and for good reason! Fresh sardines are grilled on outdoor charcoal grills and served with a squeeze of lemon, a sprinkle of sea salt, and a side of bread and olives. Bacalhau is Portuguese for codfish, and it's a staple of the Portuguese diet. There are many different ways to prepare it, from baked with potatoes and cream to fried with garlic and herbs.

Pasteis de nata! These small, creamy custard tarts are a must-try when you're in Lisbon. They're made with a flaky pastry crust and filled with a sweet, eggy custard. The Francesinha is a hearty sandwich that originated in Porto, but it's popular throughout Portugal. It's made with layers of bread, ham, sausage, and steak, topped with melted cheese and a spicy tomato sauce. Yummy!

Finally, Arroz de Marisco! This is a flavorful seafood rice dish that's popular in Lisbon. It's made with a mix of shellfish and other seafood, along with rice, vegetables, and spices. These are just a few examples of the delicious food you can find in Lisbon! There are many other dishes to try, as well as plenty of excellent local wines and beers to wash them down with.




The Architecture!

Lisbon is famous for its colorful buildings, stunning architecture, and beautiful streets, making it a perfect place for a leisurely stroll. Lisbon is known for its unique and beautiful architecture, with a mix of styles from different eras and cultures. You'll find everything from Gothic cathedrals to colorful tiled buildings to modern skyscrapers in the city.


From the Azulejos, the beautiful blue and white tiles that you'll see on many buildings throughout Lisbon to the Gothic, Arabic, Baroque, and Manueline influences in the buildings, Lisbon has a rich history that is a uniquely Portuguese style of architecture that flourished in the 16th century during the Age of Discovery.

Overall, the architecture in Lisbon is a stunning mix of styles and eras that reflects the city's rich history and culture. Whether you're admiring the intricate tile work on a traditional building or marveling at the sleek lines of a modern structure, there's always something beautiful to see in Lisbon!




The Nightlife!

Lisbon is known for its vibrant nightlife, with plenty of bars, clubs, and live music venues to choose from. Nightclubs and bars in Lisbon have a bustling nightlife scene, with plenty of nightclubs and bars to choose from. The Bairro Alto neighborhood is particularly popular, with narrow streets lined with bars and restaurants that spill out onto the sidewalks. Lisbon also has many rooftop bars that offer stunning views of the city skyline. These are great places to relax with a drink and take in the scenery after a long day of sightseeing.

Lisbon loves to celebrate, and there are many street parties and festivals throughout the year. The Feast of St. Anthony in June is one of the biggest, with music, dancing, and plenty of food and drink. The Portuguese people are known for their love of late nights, so don't be surprised if you find yourself out until the early hours of the morning! Many clubs and bars stay open until 4 or 5 am, and some even later on the weekends. Overall, the nightlife in Lisbon is vibrant and exciting, with plenty of options to suit every taste. Whether you're looking for a quiet bar to sip a glass of wine or a lively nightclub to dance the night away, you're sure to find it in Lisbon!


The People!

Portuguese people are known for being friendly and welcoming, making settling into the local community easy. Certainly, Lisbon is home to a diverse population of Portuguese people, who come from all walks of life and backgrounds.

Portugal is a relatively small country, but there are many regional differences in language, food, and culture. People may speak differently than people from the north or the south of the country. Like many European cities, Lisbon has a large immigrant population, with people from all over the world making their home there. You'll find communities from Brazil, Angola, Cape Verde, and many other countries, each bringing their own unique traditions and customs. Lisbon also is a city that caters to people of all ages, from young students to retirees.

You'll find plenty of families with children, as well as older couples enjoying their retirement years. Portuguese people are known for being friendly and welcoming, and this is certainly true in Lisbon. Whether you're chatting with a local at a cafe or asking for directions on the street, you're sure to be met with a smile and a warm welcome. Overall, the people of Lisbon are diverse and welcoming, with a rich mix of cultural backgrounds and traditions.


Whether you're visiting for the first time or making your home there, you're sure to find a community that welcomes you with open arms.


Of course, living in Lisbon also has its challenges, such as the higher cost of living (post-pandemic) and language barriers for non-Portuguese speakers. But overall, Lisbon is a city with a rich and vibrant culture that is sure to delight and inspire visitors from all over the world! I love living in Lisbon!
