What a great question! I get asked that a lot. So depending on your lifestyle, Lisbon has several neighborhoods that are ideal for first-time visitors. Lisbon is an increasingly popular destination for expats and digital nomads looking for a vibrant, affordable, and sunny place to call home. With its charming historic districts, bustling nightlife, stunning architecture, and proximity to the beach, Lisbon has something to offer everyone. Let's take a closer look at some of the best areas to stay in Lisbon to enhance and maximize your stay during your first visit.

Bairro Alto

If you like to sleep late and party at night, Bairro Alto is the area for you! It's THE famous go-to area for lively nightlife. It feels bohemian and alive! Perfect if you want to stay out, rock out, and vibe out. Known for its bohemian feel and party culture, Bairro Alto has countless bars, clubs, and restaurants where you can dance, drink, and mingle with locals and expats alike. During the day, Bairro Alto is also a great (and quiet) place to explore, with its winding streets, colorful facades, and hidden courtyards. If you're looking for a fun and exciting place to stay, Bairro Alto is the perfect fit.

Chiado

Chiado is considered Lisbon’s intellectual neighborhood. Known for its historical cafés, antique bookstores, and theaters. At night the streets are alive with music and artists. If you're looking for a more upscale and cosmopolitan neighborhood, Chiado might be right up your alley. Located in the heart of Lisbon, Chiado is known for its high-end boutiques, trendy cafes, and sophisticated cultural scene. Here, you can find everything from contemporary art galleries to Michelin-starred restaurants. Although it can be a bit pricey, Chiado is well-connected and centrally located, making it a convenient place to stay if you want to be close to all the action and all the major transportation avenues with the Tram 28 and the Baixa-Chido Metro station.

Baixa

Baixa is the heart of downtown Lisbon. Here you’ll find tourist-friendly shops, cafes and restaurants. Staying here, you’ll be located in the middle of action down to the waterfront and within walking distance to many major sights.

Alfama

Alfama is Lisbon’s oldest and most charming area, with medieval streets and winding stairways. Filled with traditional restaurants, fado shows, Alfama is stepping back in time. The old world charm will delight you!

Avenida da Liberdade

Lisbon’s Champs-Élysées. It’s an upscale-feel with Lisbon’s best high-end shopping and grand hotels. Although busy, the area has parks, tree-lined sidewalks and lovely gardens.

Príncipe Real

If you want posh, stay in Príncipe Real! Affluent and cosmopolitan, this area is known for pop up shops, concept stores, designer boutiques, and galleries. plus it’s one of Lisbon’s most LGBTQ-friendliest neighborhoods.

Belém

Although not city central, some tourists prefer to stay here because of its close proximity to the riverviews, the Tower of Belém and Jerónimos Monastery. Super family-friendly with excellent public transportation to the city center.

In conclusion, Lisbon has plenty of great neighborhoods to choose from, each with its own unique charm and character. Whether you're looking for history, nightlife, culture, or relaxation, there's a neighborhood in Lisbon that's perfect for you. So why not pack your bags and start exploring? Who knows, you might just find your dream home in the heart of Portugal's capital city.
